Ford Updating C-Max Hybrid and Fusion Hybrid to Improve Fuel Economy

Ford is taking action to improve the on-road fuel economy performance of 2013-model hybrid vehicles in the United States and Canada. Starting in August, the company will make calibration updates designed to improve on-road fuel economy for owners of the 2013 Ford C-MAX Hybrid, 2013 Ford Fusion Hybrid, and 2013 Lincoln MKZ Hybrid.

Enhancements include:

  • Increasing the maximum pure electric speed to 85 mph from 62 mph, allowing increased use of electric-only mode on the highway
  • Optimizing the use of Active Grille Shutters to reduce aerodynamic drag under more driving and temperature conditions including cold weather, during air conditioner use, and when the engine coolant temperature is higher
  • Reducing the electric fan speed as a function of coolant temperature to minimize the fan’s energy consumption
  • Shortening engine warm-up time by up to 50 percent to enable electric-only driving and engine shutdown at stops sooner after cold starts
  • Optimizing the climate control system to minimize use of the air conditioning compressor and reduce the energy used in cold weather operation

According to Ford, “The amount of on-road fuel economy improvement will vary from customer to customer depending on individual driving styles and on-road conditions. In particular, customers should see the most improvement at highway speeds, during air-conditioning operation, and during operation in colder climates.”

Ford to Offer CNG/LPG Capability on 2014 F-150 Pickups

  • 2014 Ford F-150 will offer a gaseous-fuel prep option on the 3.7-liter V6 engine; it will be able to run on compressed natural gas (CNG) or liquefied petroleum gas (LPG).

According to Ford, “The 2014 Ford F-150 with 3.7-liter V6 engine will be available this fall with a factory-installed, gaseous-fuel prep package that includes hardened valves, valve seats, pistons and rings so it can operate on either natural gas or gasoline through separate fuel systems.

When the 3.7-liter V6 F-150 is equipped with a CNG/LPG engine package, it is capable of achieving more than 750 miles on one tank of gas, depending on the tank size selected. The Ford F-150 averages 23 mpg on the highway.”

Your Donlen account manager can work with you to determine if CNG or LPG is right for your application.

NTSB Suggests CDL Requirement for Trucks Less Than 26,001 Pounds

According to TRALA (Truck Rental and Leasing Association), the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) this week suggested that the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) evaluate requiring drivers of trucks weighing less than 26,001 pounds to hold Commercial Drivers Licenses (CDL).

  • This could impact you if you operate vehicles that are one ton or greater, or 3/4 ton pick-ups.

We will be watching this closely and report back on any significant developments. In the meantime, should you have questions on this, please contact Steve Jansen at 847-412-4961.

Maryland Scofflaws Could See Vehicle Registrations Suspended for Failure to Pay Tolls

Using the Maryland E-ZPass toll lanes without a transponder will cost you a $50 fine and possible vehicle registration suspension under a law that took effect July 1. The Maryland Transportation Authority, operator of eight toll facilities, has begun the transition to the new collection process, which officials said will plug a loophole and allow them to recover as much as $7 million in overdue tolls.

Contact your Donlen account manager to discuss your toll management program options.

And finally…

And finally, what do an auto assembly line and a New York soup kitchen have in common? If you said kaizen, you’d be correct. (Well, ok, maybe you didn’t actually say that….) Instead of a typical corporate monetary donation to The Food Bank for New York City, Toyota offered kaizen, a Japanese word meaning “continuous improvement”, and one of the keys to the auto manufacturer’s success. Using their proven methods to streamline process, Toyota’s engineers massively transformed the Food Bank: wait time at a Harlem soup kitchen decreased from 90 minutes to 18; time filling bags at a food pantry on Staten Island was reduced to 6 minutes from 11; and the time it took volunteers to pack boxes of supplies for victims of Hurricane Sandy went from 3 minutes to 11 seconds! Think how many more people can be helped because of these improvements. What a great example of businesses and communities working together to truly make a difference.

Have a nice weekend. Safe travels.
