The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) rule that prohibits commercial truck and bus drivers from using handheld cell phones while driving went into effect January 3. This new rule affects an estimated 4 million interstate drivers. Individual drivers face civil penalties up to $2,750, while employers can be held liable and fined up to $11,000 per infraction committed while drivers are carrying out company business or otherwise acting on the employer’s behalf. FMCSA has made it abundantly clear that employers are responsible if their employees violate the rule.

Volt Update: On Thursday, GM announced “enhancements to the vehicle structure and battery coolant system in the Chevrolet Volt that would further protect the battery from the possibility of an electrical fire occurring days or weeks after a severe crash.” They went further to say, “GM conducted four successful crash tests between Dec. 9 and 21 of Volts with the structural enhancement. The enhancement performed as intended. There was no intrusion into the battery pack and no coolant leakage in any of the tests.” > Read the full statement here

Better to be prepared for anything.

And Finally…

And finally, we don’t know about you, but FridayFleet can’t wait to see what’s coming at the Detroit Auto Show opening next week. There have been pictures and information on a few models leaked to the press already. Like the 2013 Ford Mustang Boss 302 …in green! And the 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee Diesel Sport Utility. But our favorite (for the moment, until we see more anyway!) is the Nissan Pathfinder Concept. Maybe it’s just because the teaser picture is so beautiful. Now whether these really will debut or not next week, we’re not sure. We’ll all just have to wait and see.

Have a nice weekend. Safe travels.
