Navigating Floods, and Tips to Pass on to Your Drivers

Midwest residents watched as the Illinois River reached the highest level in 70 years, causing record flooding in the area. The Mississippi River spilled over onto land, and some towns in Indiana saw as much as 14 feet of water. Homes were flooded, residents evacuated, and tragically, several lives were lost.

Even metropolitan areas including Chicago were heavily impacted by the storms, with expressways closed and flooded basements. And each morning, the traffic helicopters projected images of vehicles trying to drive through standing water — and not making it through to the other side.

Did you know it takes as little as six inches of water to cause stalling, and 12 inches can float a vehicle?

The following important points come directly from FEMA; pass these along to your drivers:

  • Six inches of water will reach the bottom of most passenger cars causing loss of control and possible stalling.
  • A foot of water will float many vehicles.
  • Two feet of rushing water can carry away most vehicles including sport utility vehicles (SUV’s) and pick-ups.
  • Do not attempt to drive through a flooded road. The depth of water is not always obvious. The road bed may be washed out under the water, and you could be stranded or trapped.
  • Do not drive around a barricade. Barricades are there for your protection. Turn around and go the other way.
  • Do not try to take short cuts. They may be blocked. Stick to designated evacuation routes.
  • Be especially cautious driving at night when it is harder to recognize flood dangers.

Driver’s Corner

Picture this: You’re driving in a storm and there are flood warnings on the radio. So far, it’s only heavy rain, but you come across a bridge that looks to be covered in water. Your destination is right across that bridge; it doesn’t look too bad. Go or turn back? If you said “go” you could put yourself at risk of being swept into the water. Never attempt to cross a water-covered bridge during a flood warning. Turning back may seem inconvenient, but it could save your life.

And finally…

And finally, you probably take all those sounds in your car for granted. The “ding ding ding” of the seat belt warning. The “click” of the door closing. Well, if you’re driving a BMW, every sound you hear comes from the sound designers at the BMW Research and Innovation Center in Munich. And we mean every sound: button, seatbelt, motor, door…you name it. According to one of the BMW sound artists, the sounds are unique to each brand. BMW sounds are classic, with longer finishes, the Mini is more playful, and the Rolls Royce sounds are reminiscent of a harp. Who knew? Maybe we’ll all start paying more attention. > Check out this cool video of BMW sound designers here

Have a nice weekend. Safe travels.
